Alicia Lara

Alicia Lara is the Vice President for Community Investment at the United Way of Greater Los Angeles where she is responsible for the development and management of policy, research and grantmaking programs. United Way is focused on ending homelessness, increasing the high school graduation rate, and increasing the financial stability of low-income families.

On homelessness, she has led an ambitious and high profile effort in Los Angeles with business leaders to end chronic and veteran homelessness. In the area of education, she is supporting aggressive reforms through parent and student organizing. In financial stability, she is working collaboratively with workforce investment boards on job training programs and with local organizations to help low income families with financial coaching and planning.

Previously, Ms. Lara was with The California Endowment, a health related philanthropic organization with an annual grantmaking budget of $150M in areas such as health care access, health disparities and mental health. For eight years she held a number of positions there including vice president of program; director of responsive grantmaking; and senior program officer.

A long time community organizer, Ms. Lara has spent over twenty years in the nonprofit community working on women’s health, HIV/AIDS services and prevention, homelessness and health care policy.

She currently serves on the board of directors for the Los Angeles United Methodist Urban Foundation and the Ms. Foundation, and on the public policy committee for Southern California Grantmakers. Ms Lara was recently appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to the Commission on Community and Family Services.

The first in her family to attend and graduate from college, she holds a Bachelors Degree in Political Science from San Diego State University and a Masters Degree in Public Health from the University of California at Los Angeles. A native of California, she currently lives in Los Angeles with her partner and 5-year old twins.
   

2011 Women of Vision awardee, Kathy Miller, is President of the Texas Freedom Network in Austin, TX. Under Kathy’s leadership, the Texas Freedom Network has made critical progress in the struggle to bring comprehensive sexual health education to one of the most conservative states in the nation.
