Phoebe Eng

Phoebe Eng is director of Creative Counsel and co-founder emeritus of The Opportunity Agenda. She has worked with senior management and leadership teams for over a decade to develop programs and networks that amplify the voices of people of color and women in our nation's cities, companies and communities. She has worked with several Fortune 100 companies, including Procter & Gamble, IBM and JP Morgan Chase, and with foundations, public agencies, universities and civic associations, such as the National League of Cities.

From 2002 to 2004, Ms. Eng also directed the Social Change Communications Project, a foundation-sponsored research initiative exploring the role of strategic communications in social justice advocacy. She sits on the Working Mother Media's Best Companies for Women of Color Initiative Advisory Board of Working Mother Media's Best Companies for Women of Color initiative, which produces an annual best-practices list. As a board member of the Ms. Foundation for Women, she has helped conceptualize a fund aimed at elevating the voices of women and minorities in public policy.

Ms. Eng started her career as a mergers and acquisitions attorney in New York and Hong Kong. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Newsweek; on CNN, A&E and NPR; and in the books of political, business and social science leaders, such as in John Naisbitt's Megatrends Asia, Mary Pipher's The Middle of Everywhere, Marie Wilson's Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World, and Robin Morgan's Sisterhood Is Powerful. She is the author of Warrior Lessons (Simon & Schuster, 1999), a memoir about empowerment and leadership, and the upcoming Fluency: The Art of Crossing Borders, about the complexities and opportunities of a multicultural society. She has received the New York City Mayor’s Innovator Award, the Arthur T. Vanderbilt Medal, and a Distinguished Service Award from NYU School of Law.

Ms. Eng is currently on the Advisory Board of the National Association of Asian American Professionals, the largest and fastest-growing organization of Asian American professionals in the U.S. and Canada, and is a founding sister of several Asian women’s leadership networks, including an Asian women’s corporate network that is now the largest in the country.

My race and gender are so intertwined within me that I don't know where one begins and the other ends. I'm a black woman and I don't really give a hoot why folks might choose to discriminate against me….I just know as Ms. knows, that discrimination in any form is painful, dehumanizing and can turn an otherwise gentle soul into an angry black woman within seconds.
