Building Democracy

The Ms. Foundation for Women is guided by our vision of a just and inclusive democracy. Throughout our funding, we aim to change systems that prevent people from participating fully in government and civil society. For example, we support groups that advocate for changes to the criminal justice and immigration systems so that all women, families and communities have the opportunity and resources to lead healthy, safe lives and benefit from the democratic principles of equity and justice.

Whether in the wake of Hurricane Katrina or in the midst of key national policy debates, the Ms. Foundation promotes the voices and vision of those who have long been excluded from decision-making tables, especially low-income women, women of color, youth, LGBTQ individuals and immigrants. By investing in long-term civic engagement—not just during election years—and supporting strategies that bring in new constituencies and expand social movements, the Ms. Foundation builds women’s collective power to ignite social change and strengthen our democracy as a whole.
