Gulf Coast Radio Documentaries

In August 2007, just before the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the Ms. Foundation supported two intensive media justice and radio documentary trainings for our Katrina Women’s Response Fund grantees in Gulfport, MS and Baton Rouge, LA. Women, youth and grassroots organizers directly impacted by the storms came together to learn the ins and outs of radio production, guided in the process by radio documentary experts from the People’s Production House. The resulting documentaries aired on Pacifica stations across the country; the Moore Community House piece also aired on BBC.

For a window into this moving experience, view photos; watch a video of the youth training in Renaissance Village, a FEMA trailer park in Baker, LA; and read our blog, including reflections and analysis written about the trainings and Hurricane Katrina.
