Katrina Women's Response Fund

In 2005, immediately after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the Gulf Coast, the Ms. Foundation established the Katrina Women’s Response Fund (KWRF). Through KWRF, we initially worked to meet the urgent needs of those we knew would be disproportionately affected by the storms—low-income women, women of color, their families and communities. We then moved quickly to build the leadership and capacity of existing and emerging grassroots and state-level organizations to advocate for a just and sustainable recovery and to promote the policy solutions of women across race and class. By 2008, the Ms. Foundation had delivered nearly $3 million through the KWRF to over 40 organizations on the Gulf Coast.

Four years after the levees broke in New Orleans, the Ms. Foundation remains invested in supporting organizations working toward a just recovery—and democracy—through our broader Southern Strategy.
