Reproductive Rights, Health and Justice

Across the U.S., women and youth are routinely denied the fundamental human right to quality reproductive health, education and services. Since our inception, the Ms. Foundation for Women has worked to uphold these basic rights by promoting policy and culture change and strengthening the reproductive rights, health and justice movement from the ground up.

Since 1989, the Ms. Foundation’s core focus has been to provide strategic support to state and local organizations across the U.S. uniquely positioned to advocate for progressive—or against restrictive—reproductive rights policies. For decades, states have remained the site of most reproductive rights struggles; in 2008, all but six considered some form of anti-choice legislation.

The Ms. Foundation also builds the capacity of grassroots organizations across race, class and gender through targeted grants, technical assistance, and leadership development. In fact, over the years we have helped grow a national reproductive justice movement, which places reproductive rights and health within a broader social justice context and elevates the voices of those most affected by failed policies, yet least heard in the national debate: low-income women, women of color, immigrant women and LGBTQ individuals.

Together, our grantees are creating connections and mobilizing diverse constituencies to advance equitable, inclusive solutions that meet all women’s needs.

In reality, millions of women continue to be denied access to reproductive health care due to discriminatory policies and issues like immigrants’ rights and environmental justice that directly impact women’s health. Our grantees make connections to these and other social, political and economic issues that women live every day. With our support, they’re able to advance innovative, cross-cutting solutions to eliminate the myriad barriers to reproductive rights that so many women still face.

Year after year, reproductive justice organizations are building greater power to ignite change at local, state and federal levels. Through national gatherings and other strategic networking opportunities provided by the Ms. Foundation, our grantees connect with one another and build bridges with immigrant rights, labor and other social justice groups. Their creative collaborations expand support for reproductive justice and strengthen the progressive movement overall.

Reproductive justice places reproductive rights and health within a social justice context. It considers the full range of women’s lived experience across race and class and addresses the many social, political and economic issues that prevent millions of women from exercising their rights and accessing the care they need.

Migrant Health Promotion works to make sure migrant farm workers throughout the US get access to health and health services, mobilizing migrant farm communities to fight for the services, resources, and rights they deserve. Learn more and view the slide show
