Policy and Culture Change

The Ms. Foundation for Women believes firmly that in order to tackle the root causes of injustice across race, class and gender we must change both policy and culture. In fact, the two go hand in hand: shifts in cultural beliefs and values can open the door for progressive policy change, while just policies can be a catalyst for just behavior and ideas.

For over 35 years, the Ms. Foundation has delivered strategic grantmaking and "more than money" support to thousands of organizations that are changing the way people think about each other and the world, and advancing new and inclusive solutions to the many forms of discrimination and inequity that we as a nation face.

At local, state, Tribal and national policymaking tables, our grantees are putting women's priorities-and their solutions-at the center, rather than the margins, of debate. From poverty to poor health, women-especially low-income women and women of color-are disproportionately impacted by inequity. As such, they're best positioned to develop alternatives to unjust policies that have harmed our country for so long.

Meanwhile, our grantees are challenging cultural norms in their families, schools, and communities to make way for long-term social change. Whether launching a media campaign, or using the performing arts, poetry, film, or digital storytelling, they're transforming behaviors and beliefs for a more just and safe world.

Our ultimate goal? To help build a nation where equitable and inclusive policies that benefit everyone are the rule rather than the exception to it, and a culture where we are all equally visible, valued and heard.
