Diversity Statement

The Ms. Foundation for Women believes that equity and inclusion are the cornerstones of true democracy, and we challenge ourselves as an organization to maintain diversity in our leadership, staff, grantee partners and in the organizations with which we collaborate. We understand diversity as being inclusive of, but not limited to, gender, race, ethnicity, class, national origin, sexual orientation, disability and religion. More than 50% of our 15-member Board of Directors are people of color: 14 women (7 of whom are women of color), and one African-American male. Our staff is composed of 29 women and 3 men, 16 of whom are people of color, and our Executive Team of 7 women includes 4 women of color.

We believe that women and girls most affected by a problem are best positioned to create just solutions for all. Many of our grantee organizations are led by and for low-income women and women of color who confront multiple forms of discrimination and are most impacted by flawed policies that perpetuate poverty and inequality. That's why they're best positioned to create inclusive and just solutions that benefit everyone.

2010 Marie C. Wilson Young Woman's Leadership Awardee, Jasmin Woodbury, was the youngest youth organizer to ever join Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE). In her time at DARE Jasmin elevated the voices of youth, spearheading a campaign to make the local school board and the superintendent pay attention to the root causes of high drop-out rates in public schools. My race and gender are so intertwined within me that I don't know where one begins and the other ends. I'm a black woman and I don't really give a hoot why folks might choose to discriminate against me….I just know as Ms. knows, that discrimination in any form is painful, dehumanizing and can turn an otherwise gentle soul into an angry black woman within seconds.
