Shelley Emmer

Director, Institutional Giving
As Director of Institutional Giving, Shelley brings extensive experience in social service and educational organizations, as well as in the private sector, to support the Ms. Foundation's partnerships with foundation and corporate partners -- and to advance women's rights.   

Previously, she was the Doe Fund's Director of Foundation and Corporate Partnerships, working with funders to support programs for homeless individuals. At the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, as Deputy Director for Foundation Partnerships, Shelley added foundation donors, helping the organization provide services to children and women in developing nations. As Director of Literacy Programs at the New York Association for New Americans, Shelley headed ESL and Citizenship Education initiatives that served thousands of immigrants and she implemented an evaluation and restructuring of NYC's Department for the Aging's immigrant education programs. Shelley also worked at the Nightingale-Bamford School on special events and prospect research and headed its summer program for non-English speakers.

Education and publishing experience provide Shelley with additional skills to further her Ms. Foundation work. She taught children and adults in schools and nonprofits. She has edited and written publications for nonprofits and has worked for major publishing houses.
 
A native New Yorker, Shelley earned a BA from Queens College and a Masters in Education from Hunter College.
   

In early 2011 the Ms. Foundation brought together two grantees, Sarita Gupta of our National Jobs with Justice and Attica Woodson Scott of Kentucky Jobs with Justice, for a conversation about KJwJ's recent victory in defeating harsh anti-immigrant legislation in the Bluegrass State -- and how legislating hate harms us all.
